  i came across this interpretation of 21st century melancholic music culture while reading mark fisher’s essay “the slow cancellation of the future” and immediately the “songs playing in another room” (or abandoned mall) meme came to mind:

  “The artists that came to be labeled hauntological were suffused with an overwhelming melancholy; and they were preoccupied with the way in which technology materialized memory–hence a fascination with television, vinyl records, audiotape, and with the sounds of these technologies breaking down. This fixation on materialized memory led to what is perhaps the principal sonic signature of hauntology: the use of crackle, the surface noise made by vinyl. Crackle makes us aware that we are listening to a time that is out of joint.
  

  “…And hovering behind much music sonic hauntology is the difference between analog and digital: so many hauntological tracks have been about revisiting the physicality of analog media in the era of digital ether. MP3 files remain material, of course, but their materiality is occulted from us, by contrast with the tactile materiality of vinyl records and even compact discs.” (pg. 21)
  

  (“hauntology” relates to the physical absence of an agent that continues to assert influence on the present.)

  this excerpt is preceded by an explanation of the ways in which tele-technology collapses space as well as time (fisher cites the availability of spatially distant events), and followed by a claim that the “crackle” embodies both an acknowledgement that the future won’t ever arrive, and “a refusal to give up on the desire for the future,” hence our melancholy. the “songs playing in an abandoned mall” (and images of uninhabited places/found footage often used in vaporwave video art) really advances personifications of capitalist realism, in which “life continues but has also somehow stopped” and rests in a vacuum.
